The Oak Island Mystery

The "money pit" in 1947
The “money pit” in 1947

The Legendary Oak Island is a 140-acre island in Lunenburg County on the south shore of Nova Scotia, Canada. The tree-covered island is one of about 360 small islands in Mahone Bay. It is only connected to the mainland by a modern causeway, the island is privately owned, and advance permission is required for any visitation – tours were conducted at one point, but have been cancelled.  What’s the mystery of Oak Island you may ask?  Well the so-called “Money Pit” located on the  site has been for over 200 years of  the focus treasure hunting. Repeated excavations have reported layers of apparently man-made artifacts as deep as 31 meters (102 ft), but ended in collapsed excavations and flooding. Critics have argued that there is no treasure and that the pit is a natural phenomenon, likely a sinkhole. Furthermore , physical evidence from the initial excavations is absent or has been lost. Here is some of the timeline of  mystery:

  • 1795 – 18 year old Daniel McGinnis, after observing lights coming from the island (Some argue U.F.O.’s, others pirates), discovered a circular depression in a clearing on the southeastern end of the island. Adjacent to the clearing was a tree with a tackle block on one of its overhanging branches.  Daniel McGinnis, with the help of friends John Smith (in early accounts, Samuel Ball) and Anthony Vaughan, excavated the depression and discovered a layer of flagstones a few feet below. On the pit walls there were visible markings from a pick. As they dug down they discovered layers of logs at about every 10 feet (3.0 m). They abandoned the excavation at 30 feet (9.1 m). This initial discovery and excavation was first briefly mentioned in print in the Liverpool Transcript in October 1856. A more complete account followed, again in the Liverpool Transcript, the Novascotian, British Colonist, and A History Of Lunenburg County (the last source based on the Liverpool Transcript articles).
  • 1803 – According to the original articles and the memories of Vaughan, another company examined what was to become known as the “Money Pit.”  The Onslow Company continued the excavation down to approximately 90 feet (27.43 m) and found layers of logs or “marks” about every ten feet (3 m) and layers of charcoal, putty and coconut fiber at 40, 50 and 60 feet (12, 15 and 18 m ).  According to one of the earliest written accounts, at 80–90 feet (24–27 m), they recovered a large stone bearing an inscription of symbols.  Several researchers apparently attempted to decipher the symbols. One translated them as saying: “forty feet below, two million pounds lie buried.”  The symbols currently associated with the “forty feet down…” translation and seen in many books first appeared in True Tales of Buried Treasure, written by explorer and historian Edward Rowe Snow in 1951. In this book he states he was given this set of symbols by Reverend A.T. Kempton of Cambridge, Massachusetts. Nothing  is known about Kempton’s involvement in the Oak Island tale or how he knew of the symbols. The pit subsequently flooded up to the 33-foot (10 m) level. Bailing did not reduce the water level, and the excavation was abandoned yet again.

  • 1849 – Investors formed The Truro Company, which re-excavated the shaft back down to the 86 feet (26 m) level, where it flooded again. They then drilled into the ground below the bottom of the shaft. According to the nineteenth-century account, the drill or “pod auger” passed through a spruce platform at 98 feet (30 m), a 12-inch (300 mm) head space, 22 inches (560 mm) of what was described as “metal in pieces”, 8 inches (200 mm) of oak, another 22 inches (560 mm) of metal, 4 inches (100 mm) of oak, another spruce layer, and finally into clay for 7 feet (2.1 m) without striking anything else.
  • 1850 – Subterranean waterway and artificial beach were found at Smith’s Cove.
  • 1861 – First life claimed by Oak Island. A man was scalded to death by an exploding boiler.
  • 1861 – The bottom literally fell out as the items that had been at 100 feet fell farther down to hole thanks to weakening of the pit by several cross tunnels.
  • 1893 – Fred Blair and The Oak Island Treasure Company begin their investigations. Cave-in pit investigated.
  • 1897 – Triangle rock formation was discovered.
  • 1897 – Cement vault encountered and parchment was found during drilling.
  • 1897 – Second life lost when Maynard Kaiser fell to his death while being pulled out of the pit.
  • 1899 – The 2nd flood tunnel, The South Shore Tunnel, was discovered.
  • 1936 – 2nd inscribed stone found and more evidence of original cofferdam found.
  • 1965 – In one day Oak Island claimed four more lives: Bob and Bobbie Restall, Karl Grasser, and Cyril Hiltz.

One of many Oak Island Shafts Dug over the years…

So where does that leave us? No matter the year or money spent this so called “Money Pit” sits. The hunters in this game ranged from an American President, Theodore Roosevelt to actors John Wayne and Errol Flynn. But for all the digging, draining and blasting, all they ended up with was a number of holes, all full of water.  There are theories that the treasure is Shakespeare’s Original Masterpieces to the Ark of the Covenant to the lost jewels of Marie Antoinette to Freemason treasure…

The most interesting to me is that its a giant Baghdad Battery…which states the island itself was a large battery, for what we don’t know…  In the end many claims, few validations… and millions, possibly billions spent over the years…. all for not… so far anyway… 😉

Paranormal Q&A Tracy Hultay (Chapter 3)

Tracy HultayWho Are You?

Tracy Hultay

What are your thoughts on networking with other teams or investigators?

Love it , would do it all the time.. Networking is the best way to go forward towards a common goal and making amazing friends along the way.

Hunter, Investigator, Researcher – What do you want to be referred to and why?

All of the above because a good investigator should be all three 🙂

What is your most memorable paranormal experience?

Answered in the previous chapter.  (Click here to read)

Have you ever had an experience where you’ve crossed a spirit over?

Well, there was one time, i went with my brother to a taping of a TV show. We spent many hours in this cemetery so
i was on my own and while talking to the caretaker, he told me of a little girl spirit that was supposed to be there.
I took the ghost box and tried to talk to her..I thought I heard a child voice and at the end of the night, we left and
went home.. A couple days after , my daughter’s toys started going on and off by themselves.. Very strange, and even on
command.. I wondered if maybe that little girl had followed me home.. We did another ghost box session and asked her to
manipulate a toy we had out.. It did.. on command.. We told her that she needed to move on and go to her family that is
waiting for her and if she sees a light to go towards it.. We heard her yelling no, no.. and then all of the sudden, the
toy went silent and we didn’t hear her anymore.. Did we cross her over?. I don’t know. But that is the closest i have come
to it.

Did you have experiences while growing up?

yes answered in previous chapter.  (Click here to read)

What is your favorite Paranormal Show (TV/Internet/Radio?

I love Ghost Adventures, My Haunted house, paranormal witness, celebrity ghost stories, ghost hunters

What are your thoughts about Provoking?

No provoking.. Be respectful! they were once people too..

What are your thoughts about Orbs? Dust or spirit? How do you tell the difference?

Depends.. I think most are dust, bugs, pollen, etc.. My theory if it’s a true orb they will emit
their own light and seem to have a sense of direction when they move about.. But when in doubt,
throw it out.

Would you ever use a Medium or Psychic on your team?

Sure why not. If they can help on an investigation for communication or they can validate what some equipment
picks up, i am all for it. Some people are lucky enough to have the gift, they should use it.

Paranormal Q&A Tracy Hultay (Chapter 2)

Tracy HultayWho are you?

Do you believe in Reincarnation? Who do you think you were in your past life (or lives)?

I am on the fence about reincarnation.. I don’t fully understand it but have read about it and it’s
very interesting to me.

What are your thoughts on Para Unity?

OMG We should all be one with the paranormal!! I hate all the back biting there is in this field.. I mean, there are things or people i can say i don’t care for, for one reason or another so i won’t preach, however, we are ALL out for the same goal and that is to get answers to the afterlife.. We NEED to get along!!

Have you ever investigated a Church? What are your thoughts on this?

I have been to a church rumored to be haunted, but not technically investigated.. I know how people think that it’s bad or
wrong to think a church to have paranormal activity, but i have heard and read stories .. Alot of religious people
frown on ghost talk , ghost hunting, etc.. Although ghost and spirits are mentioned in the bible.. I don’t believe all
ghosts and spirits to be evil or demonic and i don’t see anything wrong with it.. Just my opinion, so i would be ok
with investigating a church.

When having a joint investigation with another team(s), how do you select the team(s) or members of other teams that you invite?

I love to investigate with other teams! I love to see what others bring to the paranormal table. Usually it’s with people that
we meet on investigations that we become friends with and chose to get together again.. First you need to have common ideas
about investigating and what we may not bring to an investigation, someone else might.. I believe it’s a constant learning
experience when it comes to the paranormal and the more we teach, the more we learn.. for all groups. Sharing ideas and
new equipment is the only way for advancement and answers!

What do you tell someone looking to join a team, what should they look for or ask?

I guess they should look for people who are honest and not out for the notoriety and are willing to
help you learn and get started in the field the right way..

Any advice to a group just starting out?

My advice is to have an open mind. it’s so important. Be professional.. Don’t provoke the spirits.. They were once
people. If you wouldnt treat people like that, don’t treat them like that in death.. Be respectful!!

Do you think it’s important to share findings with others in the paranormal community?

Absolutely! If we are all in it for the common goal of finding answers to the afterlife, then why would we hide what
we find!!

You run across a team that you feel gives a bad name to the field. How do you handle the situation? Do you confront them about it?

No, i wouldn’t personally.. or would try not to.. I have said things in the past when i don’t agree, but it just causes more
harm than good.. I do not believe in making money off people in this field so when it comes to that, it bothers me.

Do you feel it is important to do a background investigation on the location (land/building) that you’re going to investigate?

Yes and no.. I like to know where i am going and the history of the place but maybe not so much the claims of activity because
i think that it can influence your investigation and you would be looking for those things.. It’s better to go in blindly, see
what evidence you can find and compare for validations later..

Paranormal Q&A Tracy Hultay (Chapter 1)

Tracy HultayWho are you?

My name is Tracy Hultay

Explain your Methodology?

On investigations we use a ghost box for real time spirit communication.. It’s very controversial
as a lot of people think it is just a broken radio. I believe it works after using it over the last few years working with it in different types, styles, and sweep rates receiving valid
answers to questions. My brother Steve does a lot of research
on this and develops his own ghost boxes.

Favorite Haunts?

One of my favorite places to go is the Shanley Hotel in Napanoch NY. The place is awesome. We have gotten some great evidence and had some interesting experiences. I absolutely love Gettysburg. The history and the town are just amazing and the paranormal activity is a bonus.

Personal Experiences?

One of my favorite experiences comes from using the ghost box. After my father passed away suddenly in Nov. 2009,
I asked my brother (Steve) if he thought that dad would come through the box since he knew about it and how we used it. I said
to Steve, “If i can get dad to come through in his own voice, I will truly believe that this works” Well after doing session daily
for a couple months and not hearing him, one day it happened. I was finishing a session and I record each one. I said, ” ok dad,
i’m not hearing you, i’ll say goodbye and i’ll try again later”. With that i shut it down and replayed it later on. At the end
when i say that last sentence, I clearly hear my dad in his own voice say ,” Bye Gutch”.. a nickname he always called me. I
immediately called Steve, crying, telling him I did it. Anyone who knew my dad at all admits that it is his voice. That is my best
personal experience. Proves to me that there really is life after death and that we are ok when we pass on.. Which is exactly
what i needed to know and now i look at ghost hunting a little differently as well.. While it’s a lot of fun, there is a real
need for answers for me.

Why did you get into the Paranormal?

I grew up in an old historic house built in 1845. My parents use to hear footsteps, a baby crying in the basement, and the
toilets would flush on their own.. When i was in high school i saw an apparition of a little boy in my room and later that
day, saw him again in the living room. I also saw what appeared to be an old sea captain which i found out later, my mother
also saw, except when she saw him, he was holding a baby and seemed to be looking like he needed help. So i was always interested
after those experiences. I even wrote a term paper on ghosts in school.

What’s next?

Just looking for new equipment and methods of investigating.. Always trying new things. You never know what may work
so i am game to try anything.. I once used a dog whistle before an EVP session to see if maybe the spirits were on that
frequency.. lol hey you never know so always try something new and always be open minded.

Do you think that paranormal shows (radio/TV/Internet) give groups a bad reputation?

Yes and no.. It depends. Most shows now are a dime a dozen.. I believe that because of the shows that are out, we have
new interest into the paranormal which use to never be spoken about.. Now it’s very trendy which makes people more apt to
talk about their own personal experiences. Do some shows ruin it for other teams out there? Some yes.. but again, that is a
matter of opinion too.. Just because we don’t all investigate the same, doesn’t make it wrong or right..

Who is the person in the paranormal field you look up to the most or want to be like?

I am going to get flack for this probably, but i am going to say Zak Bagans and the Ghost Adventures team. I like how they
investigate, the methods they use, the all different types of equipment they are never scared to try out. I love how they
debunk things if possible and not everything is paranormal.

Have you made a page on www.paranormaldictionary.com?

No I haven’t.

Name some Random Facts about you?

I’m a ghost hunting hairdresser.. lol I have an 8 yr. old daughter, I love to read, and I love to help my friends
through their problems. Sometimes i feel like a therapist but if i can help then i am there for them..

Are you a skeptic or a believer?

I am a skeptical believer.
