Paranormal Q&A with Kevin Ranoldo

Who are you?

My name is Kevin Ranoldo. I am the Director of the NJ Society for Paranormal Research. We are based in Southern NJ and service all of the tri-state area of NJ, PA and DE. We also have a division in York, PA operated by our PA Director, Karl Weinke. Our group currently has five full time members. Myself, my wife and co-director Melissa, our PA Director Karl Weinke, and two investigators named Steven Losier and Frank Baum

Explain your Methodology?

Our investigations are focused on finding logical and/or natural explanations to claims of paranormal activity. We collect evidence through scientific means using state-of-the-art equipment. We also seek to evaluate evidence of the paranormal, when it is found, in such a way as to make it presentable to the scientific community in an effort to turn those in the mainstream scientific field to the validity of paranormal research.

Favorite Haunts?

My personal favorite haunted locations would have to be the Flanders Hotel in Ocean City, NJ and the Stanley Hotel in Colorado. Both are full of history as well as some pretty famous ghosts as well. Haven’t had the opportunity to investigate either yet. Hopefully in the future. The Stanley Hotel is the one place I have to investigate before I die. Something about the idea that Stephen King got freaked out by ghosts there just makes it all the more intense.

Personal Experiences

Wow! Where to start? I’ve had them a lot throughout my life. The one that stands out is when I was visiting a friend and I say two full bodied apparitions dressed in 18th century clothing walk past the doorway between the dining room and the living room. I was spending the night there and had just decided to crash for the night. I wasn’t fully asleep yet but as I lay there on the couch, I saw these two figures, a man and a woman, walk by the doorway.

The second one happened at my in-law’s house. My wife and I were not married yet. We were house sitting for friends of ours and we had stopped back at my wife’s house to get some stuff. We walked in and the atmosphere was just real heavy. No one was home. Her parent’s house has always been active. As we were leaving I looked at the house and every light in the upstairs of the house was flickering on and off as if someone was in each room turning the lights on and off. No other house on the street was experiencing it and it was only the lights on the upper floor. My wife witnessed the event as well. Of course I did not have my mini DV to record it. Now I travel with one everywhere I go.

Why was the group was formed?

The main reason NJSPR was formed was to help people being victimized by paranormal phenomena in their home. When my wife and I were both young we each had separate experiences in our lives and the one thing we never had was someone who could give us answers and help. We both suffered with adults telling us it was all in our heads and it wasn’t real, when we both knew it was really happening. Those experiences drove us to create NJSPR, so that we could help others who, like us, have experienced frightening things in their home they cannot understand. H.P. Lovecraft once wrote, “The oldest and strongest emotion of mankind is fear, and the oldest and strongest kind of fear is fear of the unknown.” At NJSPR we believe if we can provide information and evidence to put a name or a face on the unknown, it removes a lot of the fear and gives people the power to deal with it and take back their home.

What’s Next?

We are currently engaging in a recruitment campaign. We are looking for anyone who is interested in joining our group as investigators. We have a great core group of five people who are dedicated to the world of paranormal research and investigation, but we need more. Anyone who is interested in joining us can email me directly at [email protected].

Strongest Evidence with link to it?

Our strongest evidence was gathered during a private home investigation about two years ago. It is a photograph of what appears to be the face of a demonic entity peering out of a window of a home. The photograph was taken from the outside of the house during the middle part of the afternoon on a very sunny day in August of 2009. The photograph has been analyzed by three separate professionals including one from Rowan University. All three have been unable to explain what was captured in the window. The photograph can be viewed at our website, www.njspr.org, under the NJSPR EVIDENCE page.

What’s your most asked Question by people?

Lol! There are two actually. People who learn I am a paranormal investigator always ask, “Don’t you get scared when you’re in a haunted house?” Truthfully I do not get scared by spirits. They may startle the hell out of me at times, but they do not frighten me.

The second question is one our clients ask us, and it goes to speak directly of the involvement of the media in paranormal investigation. The question is, “How come you guys don’t act like they do on TV?” They go on to say that when they watch paranormal reality shows on TV the people on those shows always jump around and scream and say, “Whoa! What was that?!” and the camera never shows what they see. I smile and simply say to them that the TV shows do that to get viewers and it’s not how the real world of paranormal investigation operates.

Dream Case/Investigation?

I think a lot of investigators would probably say Eastern State Penn, but mine is a little different. I have already stated that I’d love to investigate the Stanley Hotel, but the one place I would love to investigate more than any other, though I doubt it would ever happen, would be the White House. So many people have seen and experienced things that cannot be explained in this incredible home that to be the first paranormal team to investigate it would be an honor and a privilege. Like I said, I doubt it will happen, but I can dream, can’t I?

Do you think that paranormal shows gives groups like you a bad reputation?

Yes, I do. The problem with shows like these is two-fold. First of all, anyone who is filmed for a TV show gets paid. They have to be, it’s a legal thing. Most paranormal groups, ones that don’t have a 501-C3 non-profit designation anyway, are financed by members of the team. My group is. Anytime you have a major cable company throwing large sums of money, real estate, equipment and a dedicated fan base at them, they begin to lose sight of the real objective of this job. This job should be about helping people, not getting paid.

The second problem with shows like this is they only showcase the investigations on TV where something dramatic is found or recorded. As anyone in the field knows, a group like us can go to a hundred homes or businesses and maybe get one or two where paranormal activity is actually recorded. Seeing every week on TV episodes where the team finds evidence all the time leads to a false impression about the investigation process. When we go into a home and not find evidence of the paranormal, the home owner may get frustrated and think we didn’t do a proper job simply because they saw on TV that they always find something. If they are truly frustrated and frightened by what they believe is in their home they may say something like, “They always find stuff on TV.”

Tell us a strange but true fact about your group?

I don’t know if this qualifies but we specialize in debunking local urban legends. Living in NJ there is no shortage of them. Everything from the Atco Ghost in Atco, NJ to the Gates of Hell in Clinton, NJ. These areas of the public domain are plagued by teenagers and thrill-seekers who flock there because the local community has told these stories about ghosts and devil worshipers that wander the streets of their town. We as investigators specialize in debunking these urban legends in an effort to dispel the hunger of teenagers from engaging in dangerous behavior that could get them in trouble with law enforcement. It is an area of the paranormal that many groups do not focus on. NJSPR believes it is one that should be.

Paranormal Q&A with Samantha Agan

Samantha AganWho are you?

Samantha Agan, Investigator for DVPRS

Explain your Methodology?

We are researchers  who look to prove and disprove claims of paranormal activity with the use of scientific methods and evidence gathering techniques.  Personally after finding credible evidence in the paranormal, I like to take a psychological approach into helping the spirit move on (if the situation is required) and maintain the clients psychological well-being.

Favorite Haunts?

Bolton Mansion and Augustine

Personal Experiences:

Ever since I was a little girl I have gained many personal experiences. At my grandparents where I grew up, my bedroom was by the stairs on the second floor and I would hear footsteps going up and down the stairs when there was no one awake. Sometimes things would move out of place and my aunt was chocked by some unknown source she believed to be a spirit. Every summer as a child my grandparents would take me to an old farm house that was over 100 years old and supposedly was a Native American campground. One day while taking the dog for a walk, I looked up through the clearing and saw what seemed to be the torso of a Native American standing beside a tree. The moment that I realized what I saw, I was so scared that both me and the dog took off running down the hill falling on everything in our path. Later in life at my father’s home, I have experienced numerous amounts of demonic activity including: voices, shadows, orbs, cold spots from unexplained sources, equipment malfunctions, my animal becoming “possessed”, my father being attacked, objects being moved, and the inability to step foot in his bathroom closet without feeling a sense of intimidation. That is only a few of the many personal experiences I have witnessed.

Why was the group was formed? The founder, Al, who once was a skeptic believed that there were many paranormal interactions occurring in the local area of Delaware Valley and decided to pursue his interest in the paranormal field by gathering a group of investigators to locate, research, analyze, prove or disprove paranormal claims.

What’s Next?

We plan on continuing our investigations of the paranormal throughout Delaware Valley and share our findings with the world while preserving the sanctity of our clients locations by keeping our unique degree of professionalism.

Strongest Evidence with link to it?

Our strongest evidence is with our EVP (Electronic Voice Phenomenon) located on our website. http://www.dvprs.com/investigations.htm (Editor Note:  Website is no longer active, possibly group as well ~ Cedric.)

What’s your most asked Question by people?

What is the scariest thing that has happened to you on an investigation?

Dream Case/Investigation?

Hands down, the Stanley Hotel.

Do you think that paranormal shows gives groups like you a bad reputation?

Yes. Even though I find enjoyment from watching the shows, I think that the focus on ratings gets in the way of the viewers representation of the hard work and dedication it takes to investigate the paranormal. Most people when they talk about paranormal investigating, think it is about the fun and/or a hobby, but it takes a serious outlook and maturity to conduct a thorough investigation of the afterlife. One show that I do respect is The Haunted on Animal Planet because of the way that the show represents the effects of the paranormal on an individuals life and how the investigators come to relieve the stress and horror that may be surrounding the home and its family.

Tell us a strange but true fact about your group? Even though we have not known each other for a long time, we seem to have a deep connection that is unexplained by any of us as though we were always meant to be together as a family.

Paranormal Q&A with The Ghost Provokers!

Ghost Provokers

Who are you?

Who are WE?  Who are YOU?  If you haven’t heard of us by now, then you’ve been living a lie.  We’re the Ghost Provokers, and we’re the cutting edge of paranormal investigation teams.  While other so-called “ghost hunters” wait idly by in the dark, hoping to capture some unintelligible whisper, we prefer to drag ghosts kicking and screaming out into the light for all the world to see.  We deal beyond the beyond.  We’re like the civil rights movement for ghost hunting–minus all that equality crap.

Explain Your Methodology:

I’m pretty sure we just did.  But here it is again–we “poke ghosts” and reveal them for the waste of space they really are.  Honestly, ghosts have no business being among the living.  There is no such thing as a friendly ghost.  Casper?  He’s a jack ass.  Boo Berry?  Doesn’t even taste that great.  You poke a ghost hard enough, hit ’em where it really counts, and you’ll reveal them to be the malicious spirits they really are.  Don’t think that just because your grandmother was all nicey-nicey in life that she won’t become some hell-bitch in the after life.  Most spirits like that we’ve encountered turn out to be whores of the devil just like the rest of them.

Favorite Haunts?

Where to begin, where to begin?  The Queen Mary, was good fun.  We investigated it during a convention called Ghostfest–met a lot of other ghost hunters who were clearly intimidated by the results we were able to achieve.  But its worth noting the investigation we just wrapped up at the Warner Grand Theater in San Pedro, California.  We all know that stage actors in particular are blood sucking parasites that feed off of applause and praise in life, but in the afterlife their taste for that stuff reaches ridiculous proportions!  Be sure to check it out when it premiers on our website, ghostprovokers.com this August 16th!  AND, if you’re looking to support our righteous cause, for the cost of a t-shirt we’ll send you a Ghost Provokers t-shirt, put your name in the credits and even have our lead investigator call you up to say “thanks” before promptly hanging up before you can trace the line.

Personal Experiences…

We make everything personal, so this question is just silly to us.

Why was the group formed?

These days it seems like everyone and their mom has been starting their own ghost hunting show.  What we felt this world needs are real heroes, bringing real science to bear down on this matter.  That, and there are so many people out there who think that a lot of this stuff can be explained by every day normal means.  That cold chill crawling up your spine late at night?  That’s no breeze, brother.  Yah, maybe your window is open, but you need to look past the obvious and see things for the freaky stuff they really are.  Chances are it the spirit of some craze convict recently put to death in the federal prison down the street who is looking to posses your body and make you do unspeakable things to your cat!  But no one wants to hear that.  Just the very idea is too scary for most people.  That’s why we’re here.  To educate the masses of their own ignorance.

What’s next?

Again, we’re going to plug our August 16th episode of Ghost Provokers vs. The Warner Grand.  But if you can’t wait for that, check out our website every week for Jim Dooley’s Ghost Hunting Camera Tips.  Yah, he’s kind of a douche, but he can be very entertaining at times.  Chances are YOU probably suck at capturing ghosts on video and need the tips anyway.

Strongest Evidence with link to it?

The best evidence we’ve ever caught on video is from our first episode where a ghost threw a brick at our lead investigator’s private area, not once, but I think about ten times in total.  Needless to say, we really pissed that ghost off–which is what we set out to do–and got the bruises to prove it!  Scott Butterfield, our lead investigator, will do just about anything to get a rise out of restless spirits.  He’s been pushed down stairs, smacked, scratched, bitten.  The rest of us get a big charge out of watching.

What’s your most asked Question by others?

Most of the time people ask if we’re for real.  Seriously.  Seriously?  We can’t even dignify that with an answer.

Dream Case / Investigation

It would have to involve some kind of haunted seven-eleven–or strip club. Which ever comes first.

Do you think paranormal shows gives groups like you a bad reputation?

Absolutely.  Most of those guys you see on TV are punks who couldn’t touch us in their best day.  Now, you may argue–but people actually watch THEIR shows.  Yah?  Do you think that’s all we’re after?  The money?  The fame?  Well, those sound pretty good don’t they?  They sure do.  Yip.  That’d be nice.

Tell us a strange but true fact about your group…

Jim, our cameraman, is the brother-in-law of Scott, our lead investigator.  I’m pretty sure they hate each other.

The Ghost Provokers are an online parody who shoot in actual locations that are reportedly haunted.  Their last episode was aboard the Queen Mary, a sight famous for its historic ghost sightings.  Their new episode features the Warner Grand theater and is already in progress.  They are looking for $1500 to offset production and advertising costs.  If you’d like to donate or offer your support visit: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1408439259/ghost-provokers-vs-warner-grand-theater! (editors note: they hit their mark and completed the episode, and may have caught a real ghost in a picture during the process….)

Paranormal Q&A with Al Graeber

Who are you?

AL Graeber, Director of DVPRS (Delaware Valley Paranormal Research Society)

Explain your Methodology?

We are mainly a scientific based paranormal research group. We have to be able to prove evidence using scientific means.

Favorite Haunts?

Augustine Inn, Bolton Mansion, Knox Mansion

Personal Experiences?

All of the personal experiences i have had have happened while investigating. Unlike so many others i have never experienced anything before starting to investigate.

Why was the group was formed?

I formed this group because so many other groups weren’t accepting new members and i was kinda looking for something more professional that a lot of the groups i saw out there.

What’s Next?

Next for DVPRS we will get involved in videotaping our investigations so we can post videos on our website and You tube to showcase our team and investigating style.

Strongest Evidence with link to it?

We have a lot of good photo and audio evidence on our web page. http://www.dvprs.com/investigations.htm  (Editor’s note:  Group & Site no longer active.)

What’s your most asked Question by people?

Don’t you ever get scared doing this?

Dream Case/Investigation?

I really do not have a dream investigation, just helping families out with there fears of the paranormal is good enough for me.

Do you think that paranormal shows gives groups like you a bad reputation?

Of course they do. The public looks at the TV shows and think thats what a Paranormal investigation is all about, provoking, acting like fools. In the 22 investigations that we have preformed we have amassed so much better evidence than most of the “TV stars” of the paranormal field

Tell us a strange but true fact bout your group?

We are not afraid to experiment. We are working on an experiment currently that we think/hope will give us an entirely different way of communicating with spirits.
